Maps Expert Drums on Roland Electronic Kit

Author: admin  //  Category: Electric Drum Kits

This is me playing Maps on expert difficulty in the solo drum tour of Rock Band.

I’m using a modification which allows me to play the game using an electronic drum kit. A complete and super detailed FAQ written by me is available at http://www.rkuo.com/blogs/rkuo_blog/pages/Using-an-electronic-drum-set-with-Rock-Band.aspx .

I’m posting this mainly to chronicle my own progress at the game, not to claim I’m a great drummer. Stupid comments will be deleted.

UPDATE: I now have gold on this song. FC’d it outside the two triplet sections. No point in uploading it, I didn’t get the run on video and it looks pretty much like this anyway. =)

I know I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I might make a couple more.

Q & A:

1. Q: What’s up with your kit? Is it modded?
A: Well, no… It is very simple to hook up this setup. All it takes is a Guitar Hero: World Tour drum kit, an electronic drum kit, a MIDI cable, and some changes to the MIDI settings on the electronic drum kit.

2. Q: What drum kit is this?
A: This is a Roland TD-9KX series V-Drum kit

3: Q: How much did it cost?
A: I got the kit for $2500, then I had to buy the stand for the kit (Roland MDS-9 Stand), which was around $300-$400, then I had to buy a bass pedal for the kit (I got a Gibraltar Intruder Series Double-Chain Drive Double Bass Pedal) which was around $250, and finally, I had to buy a throne for it (Gibraltar Hydraulic Throne), which was (a guesstimate) about $150. All-in-all about $3000-$3200

4. Q: Holy crap, you bought a $3000 kit just for Rock Band?! Wow, what a waste…
A: Actually I bought the kit back when i had Rock Band 1 about a year ago. But I never thought to mod the kit so I could use it for Rock Band alone… Now that WOULD be a waste. Even though Rock Band got the ball rolling for me to start playing drums, I would’ve NEVER bought a $3000 kit just for Rock Band.

5. Q: How long have you been playing drums?
A: About a year now… Wow, when I look back at when I played a year ago, and brought it to today… I realize how much I have improved! I used to not even be able to keep a beat. Now some of the hardest beats for my friends are some of the easiest beats for me lol!

6. Q: What do you use to capture your screen?
A: I use a Dazzle DVC100 Video Capture Device with Pinnacle Studio 12.

7. Q: What do you use to edit your videos?
A: Sony Vegas Pro 8.0

8. Q: What is your gamertag?
A: Minime220220

9. Q: Why use a different setting this time? You know, the full kit instead of the simple 5 trigger setup? I know the obvious answer is for fun, but is there anything else?
A: Well I like to show that rhythm games like these are charted to where a person with a full electronic drum kit (such as myself) can play every note as it’s charted and make it sound like the actual drums in the song. And yes, it is a lot of fun :D

How To Trigger Software FOR DRUMMIES!

Author: admin  //  Category: Electronic Drum

Welcome to VPT (Virtual Percussion Technology) For Drummies! In this introductory video, we explain how easy it is to set up your electronic drums for use with Triggering Drum Software.

Toontrack Superior Drummer 2.0 / 2.1 is being used here, but you may also use these methods for BFD2, EZdrummer, Addictive Drums and so on.

Keep in mind that VPT is all about 3 things: Real Feel, Real Look, and Real Sounds! VPT is best when you use the RET Percussion electronic drums, VPT Drum Software, and a decent trigger to midi interface like the Alesis Trigger Io.

Rock Band with Electronic Drums FAQs

Author: admin  //  Category: Electronic Drum

0:32 - What is your drum kit setup?
2:29 - How do you hook up your drums to Rock Band?
3:39 - Why don’t you post more FC’s?
4:42 - Why does your drumming sometimes not match the game recording?
5:16 - Do you always hit the right pad / cymbal?
6:16 - Which drum mods do you recommend?
6:36 - Do you have any drumming tips?

Here are some ways to connect the MIDI output of your electronic drum kit to Rock Band:

1) Seth’s Adapter: http://dagware.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!FDF54D7B666066FC!344.entry (upgradeable, flexible, programmable, multiple modes)

2) J5 9 Input: http://rockbandkickbox.com/store/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=13 (sexy, somewhat flexible, expensive, no multiple modes)

3) MIDI Rocker [LX]: http://www.bytearts.com/midi_lx/index.htm (programmable, somewhat flexible, multiple modes, expensive)

4) Guitar Hero: World Tour wireless drum kit (cheap & easy, no multiple modes, not flexible)

My videos emphasize playing the song correctly on a real drum kit over FC’ing the song on the stock kit.

My kit is a Roland with a TD-3 drum brain attached to my PS3 via a MIDI to USB adapter (see http://www.rockband.com/users/sethmeisterg/gallery/detail/U/3122209 for more info).

Unless otherwise noted, the following note to real drum mappings apply:

Red: snare
Yellow: closed hi-hat, small tom
Blue: ride, open hi-hat, secondary crash, medium tom
Green: primary crash, low tom

Note that the hi-hat is yellow when closed and blue when open even though it is difficult to see me raising it with my left foot. I try to play open hi-hat notes as they should be played wherever possible, but at times I may hit another blue pad if I’m not 100% familiar with the song. Also the hi-hat close trigger isn’t very sensitive, so you’ll see me miss some yellow (closed hi-hat) notes that follow blue notes (open hi-hat).

Rock Band maps the drum patterns for certain songs for gameplay over realism. I will attempt to make special note of situations where this happens. There is, however, one major case where this occurs, as follows:

On songs that call for double time hi-hat playing, Rock Band switches the hi-hat and snare such that the hi-hat is mapped to red and the snare is mapped to yellow. This is so that when you play the hi-hat with both hands alternating, your right hand can hit the snare on the beat, just as you would on a real drum set. This turns out to be a major inconvenience when playing on a real kit, however. Luckily, I am able to change the MIDI notes on my drum brain to switch the hi-hat to map to red and snare to map to yellow by pressing a button on it. (The MIDI adapter can also perform this function, but the brain is more accessible.)
